Mia Giumelli
Support Worker
My dream as a young person entering the disability support industry is to help people feel confident, accepted and welcomed in their community. Being able to support others to get out, connect with people and enjoy everyday experiences is something I truly love.
I chose to focus my career on disability support work rather than going straight into university because I believe I can make a real difference in people’s lives right now. Every day I get the opportunity to help participants build confidence, develop independence and enjoy meaningful community participation, and that’s incredibly rewarding.
I especially enjoy running group activities and social supports alongside my dad, Luke Giumelli, at My Mates Place. We make a great team, and working together has helped me grow so much in confidence. It allows me to truly be myself while creating fun, supportive and positive experiences for our participants.
As a young woman, I also love being able to support other young ladies who may be going through challenges I’ve experienced myself. Having that lived experience helps me connect with participants in a genuine way and offer understanding, encouragement and friendship.
I’m still at the beginning of my journey in the NDIS disability support sector, and I’m excited to see where this path takes me. What I do know is that every day I’m learning, growing, and hopefully bringing something truly unique and positive to the participants at My Mates Place.
